I finally have a video of a drawing beginning to end - it condenses 19 hours down to 3 minutes so it goes pretty fast.  Thank you to Cody Groom - an amazing videographer and photographer who produced and edited it for me.  Visit my website heatherlara.com to view the video - also on youtube

I would love to hear your thoughts!

I'm old enough to know better but not old enough to make practical use of it yet. I enjoy drawing the beauty of nature - pretty much everything but I do have my preferences. I'm a mother of two beautiful girls who make me laugh and cry and scream almost every day. I wish I had a clicker to stop time so I could sit in my studio and draw until my hand feels like a lead weight without my house turning to chaos. I tell myself that I want to sell my work but the ones I REALLY like, I want to keep for myself...this could be a problem since that's most of them. I secretly wish for natural disasters, just not in my neighborhood. I have a mean streak but I'm working on it. I have four dogs, four cats, six turtles, 2 rats and some fish and it's never enough. I'll let you in on a secret - my husband hates animals...that's LOVE, right?? We've been together for over 20 years, shit - now I just gave away my age. I love to read but don't have a book club and this makes me infinitely sad. Seems like they are everywhere - like mosquitos! but alas I can't find one for myself. I'm a democrat with a brain - which means I use common sense but I still have a heart. I'm ferocious about gay rights but still have yet to go to one of the local PFLAG meetings in my town, too nervous. I like this president, hated the last one, loved the one before that BJ and all. I voted for Hilary. I long for Sarah Palin's implosion...AGAIN. And I'm an atheist who is always searching, searching, searching.

I'm just getting started on scratchboard as I am more of a pencil user. Do you have any tips?

If you haven't already - watch the video on my profile page.  It's fast but it shows how many times I go over the same area.  Scratch LIGHT - don't try to get your white whites right away, build up to them.  The harder you scratch, the more permanent it will be - keep your instrument sharp (I toss blades every could of hours for a fresh tip) and lightly skim the surface.
Your pencil background will help you just remember that there's no coloring in spaces, your whole picture has to be filled with lines so map out your lines ahead of time so there's no confusion.  patience….. go slow and use a GOOD board - Ampersand or Essdee - all of the cardboard stuff is crap and you won't be able to layer with it.

Good luck!  Send me pics

It's on a very long list of things I want to draw - if only I could stop time!

Your work is absolutely incredible. I've never seen scratchboard work like this, you deserve every daily deviation you have, and the ones to come. I look forward to seeing more of your wonderful art ^_^.
