The first of my black and whites for the San Diego County Fair. A challenge to be sure - motion, water, feathers. I used my dremel for the water which was really cool. It saved me a LOT of time and I'll definitely use it again! It was nerve wracking trying not to dig too deep with the tool but it made the swirls and dots of the water go quickly. I photographed a group of these birds on a beach in Santa Cruz last year - they were running in and out of the surf catching something that I swear had four legs. Turtles?? they were tan and slimy looking but really small and tough to see in the best of my pictures. This was my favorite shot of the day. Here is a close-up shot
Beautiful work. I really love the aspect ratio and the negative space. It's great with the white bird on such a solid black background. The legs are my favorite part. It really shows the motion of the bird going in for the kill. The splashes add to the effect. The feathers, especially the ones on the right leg are nice. It's a little unorthodox to have it positioned so far left but it works here. It's almost like a photographer trying to catch fast action. I do wish I could see what is in the beak a little better - it is titled "Gotcha!" after all. I'm sure that is just a product of the smaller size. The only thing I would change is in the lower right. The foam seems like the same shape repeated. It would be nice if it was more random and broken up. Maybe some bigger clumps and smaller thin areas. Also the smaller foam flecks on the sand don't seem to be sitting on the sand, more like floating above it. I'm not exactly sure what to do about it - just an observation. I would love to see it in all it's 12" x 36" glory. I'm sure I'm missing a lot of beautiful detail. Great job!
This is absolutely gorgeous! I definitely want to try something like this now! You give me so much inspiration! But! It'll have to wait until after graduation. The lighting is gorgeous and the lines are so clean! How do you make it so smooth?!
