Scratchboard and Ink

This is the mighty Izu and part of my "Emerging" series. He lives in the San Diego Safari Park and has the noted distinction of being the father of all the cubs they have there. The San Diego Zoo is known for their success in breeding endangered species and the Safari Park is a great place to witness that success. Izu lives in grand enclosure that is perfect for snapping pictures of him - on any given day you can see him lounging on top of his "mountain" or asleep on top of his Jeep with his ladies nearby. I have thousands of photos of Izu and you'll see him as a recurring character in many of my works.

Just loaded a new file that is so much better - colors are dead on, and I updated prints.

Hello, dear Heathherzart)
I should say I have just made an acquaintance with your vivid art and it impressed me that much I realized I am gaining your level and higher!
Exact lines and proportions, well-made body balance and royal looking big cats cannot leave anyone without real delight!

There're some really not that important tips I should mention, however.
Firstly, even if it is a photographic appearance, some reflexes should be on lion's right paw - artist should colour the truth, especially in our case - classical tradition materials and realistic style.
Secondly, his right cheek also need some reflexes or it's loosing its' volume and looks flat.
Thirdly, of course I understand it may be your style in picturing but the surface on which he stands and walks ... My eyes are looking for it, perhaps, just a hint on it will be perfect.

Finally, my respects to the artist, your hands perform magic in real.
Regards,
Lynx_Catgirl

Yay! Oh I'm so glad you're going to enter! Just mark your calendar for April next year, that's when they open up admissions and remember that all art jurists are different. Just because you don't make it in one year doesn't mean you won't get in the next. Every year is different for me, this year I entered four pieces and they only accepted two - all other years I got every picture in that I entered. And acrylic, watercolor and oil get loads of entries but illustration, and mixed media get a lot less - your chances are greater getting into less popular categories.
It's really an amazing opportunity because it's a chance for your work to be seen by 30,000 people, it's worth a try!

Hi Halie,

I saw your work tonight - great Job! What material are you working on? It looked like a cardboard scratchboard but it was hard to tell with the lighting. It was a great spot for it, right out front but as usual they were sloppy with their lighting. I have to say the show was really disappointing in general. There were so many amazing works that weren't recognized and then odd, poorly conceived, or just plain bad work won three and four awards! I think I enjoyed the student work best of all - so many creative pieces - even the amateur works were impressive but the professional section this year was just not good. I don't know what the judges were smoking but it was almost embarrassing how bad their choices were. There have got to be some really angry artists that were passed over with no recognition at all.

This is stunning! The detail in the fur is truly amazing, I'm in awe of your talents. The way the lion blends so perfectly into the background, whist still being able to pick out the detail of the black of the mane is just perfect.
The only suggestion that I would make would be the composition. I personally would have put the blank space to the right of the picture rather then the left. It feels as if the lion's gaze is cut-off too soon and would have been nice if he had some negative space to stare into, and it doesn't feel as if having the space on the left serves much purpose, although it’s nice to have a little black for him to be emerging from, I don’t think it needed to be so much. :)

Thanks - that's a really good point - since he's looking to the right it might have been better to have the dark on the other side. You might have noticed that it's part of a series so I was just following the pattern. I like to have them walking out of the dark but I did put him very close to the edge. I placed the others with a little more room so it's not so obvious. I appreciate your comments!
