Izu 4

36" x 24"

Scratchboard and Ink

This is Izu from the San Diego Safari Park. It's actually not even finished so I'm really shocked (but pleased) about the DD. Since this picture was taken he's gotten some whiskers :).

Thanks for the DD and all the praise

Official finished version - hope the DD is still worthy!

Suggester says: "At first I thought this was a painting... then I opened it and realised it's scratchboard. The detail leaves me gobsmacked - every line of the fur is perfect! "

Wow, another one! I must say again that your very very talented. This also has an extreme amount of detail (as I forgot to mention in the other critique). It looks lifelike I really doubt that someone would think that this was scratch board with a really fast glimpse of it. So, I must say well done. These are very beautiful. It is just amazing what some people can draw of use scratchboard to create. Again, this is in one of my top ten list. (As of I have not seen anymore of your art so that may knock everything else off my list.)

He's really loud when he roars. He makes me think of my cat Milo, but much bigger and fluffier.

I've heard of scratchboard but what exactly do you do with it to create art...is it painted on or something?
Reply
:iconheatherzart:
Heatherzart Featured By Owner Dec 18, 2011  Professional Traditional Artist
Sorry for the late reply. Scratchboard is a clay coated board that comes white or pre-inked in black. Then you scratch off the black (or whatever you painted on it) to reveal the white underneath, I use an xacto knife to scrape with so I get really thin lines. Then I use a really diluted ink wash to paint over the scratches to add the color. Ink works best because it doesn't damage the surface at all and you can still make clean scratches.
