Scratchboard and Ink
20" x 30" x 2"

A Southern White Rhino from the San Diego Safari Park, the most successful breeders of white rhinos in the world, this endangered species that was once almost extinct and down to 8 rhinos left in the wild and now there are several thousand. Poaching of course is the number one cause of the decline of all rhino species which is so ridiculous when you realize that their horns contain no magic elixir for virility or anything else - it's just keratin like your hair and it grows from their skin, not their bones. I think this picture is so magnificent because it shows how fibrous and rough their horns really are and then of course the message that they're tired. Tired from the sheer effort of carrying their weight around and also tired of being hunted for what amounts to a big ball of hair.

New professional photo and I've updated print accessories, finally!

Please do!  I belong to one myself.  It's so frustrating hearing about their slaughter for something so stupid as a horn

This is simply amazing. I read a critique you gave that was very thoughtful and informative on scratchboard, so I checked out your work and was blown away. The detail and texture work is incredible, but then finding out it is scratchboard! WoW!

I love the different textures in this scratchboard. I was wondering though, how did you get part of it so smooth? What's the technique that you used?

May I ask...how did you achieve the smoothness on his forehead? I can't figure out how that could be done on scratchboard. It's amazing.

This might have been a pain to finish, but what an incredible piece! The texture of the skin and horn are amazing! I am still learning how to do scratchboard, and looking at pieces like this helps me to learn. Thank you for posting!

It was really sketchy I was terrified it would kill the board but it worked great. You just have to be really evenhanded with it.

So brilliant. I'll have to try it. My Hummingbirds in Garden was scratched by hand. It took forever. :)

Yes - Ampersand makes a board as big as 3 feet x 4 feet (I've been saving it for a couple years now waiting for just the right project). Since it comes on a wood backing they are really sturdy in the larger sizes.

All the details and different structures are amazing. I love it's skin, the way you made it, with all these wrinkles and different textures is so impressive. You made my jaw drop to the ground. Again.
